Learning Environment planning tool

These free, editable documents are referenced in our book The Right Start to Phonics.

This planning tool will support adults to plan a rich, high quality learning environment with an authentic focus on creating and exploiting opportunities to develop Early Phonic skills.

An editable example is for a mark-making space and the opportunities that may present themselves for listening to sounds made during daily activities. It demonstrates conversation starters, how adults might respond to sounds and encourage children to listen to them.

Both planning tools could also be adapted for use when children have begun their later phonic learning, perhaps drawing their attention to individual sounds they are learning at any time. Phonic learning should be embedded across a provision, enabling the children to hone and rehearse taught skills, as always!
